Senior Dog With Oily, Soft Stool and Drops of Water After Antibiotics

Reader Question
Dog started sneezing a lot (no coughing) after boarding for about 28 hours.. She had had her yearly vaccinations the week before. The boarder insist on a separate bordatello vaccination. I took her to the vet who thought she had a light case of kennel cough. He gave her a shot and 10 days of antibiotics. She is not sneezing at all anymore but her bowel movements aren't just right. Diarrhea at first but now like soft serve and she does some and moves forward and does more. It seems to have an oily consistency. I thought yesterday I could see a little screw type worm. She takes a flea preventive. I also give her heart guard for heart worms but not consistently. They seem to make her sick. She is almost strictly an inside dog. 11 years old. Sometimes goes out for 30 minuts to an hour per day. Sometimes not at all. My question is mostly about the water droplets at the end of her bm.

Answer from Our Team

Antibiotics commonly upset the gut and cause soft or loose stools, which usually settle within a few days to a couple of weeks after the course ends. A few drops of clear fluid or mucus at the end of a soft bowel movement, along with going in several spots, suggests the colon is irritated. An oily look can be extra mucus, or a sign that fat isn't being digested properly.

The "screw-type" worm you saw is important. Please take a fresh stool sample, or the worm itself in a sealed bag, to your vet so it can be identified. Heartworm preventives given less often than directed won't reliably protect her against heartworm or intestinal worms. Ask your vet about a product and schedule that suit her, about a heartworm test, and mention that the preventive seems to make her sick. Call your vet sooner if she has blood in her stool, vomits or stops eating.
