Senior Dog With a Slipping Kneecap: Are Joint Supplements Worth It?

Reader Question
My 15+ year old 42 pound pit terrier mix (found and rescued at 9 weeks) lost the use of her left hind leg 4 days ago. She could use it some after the first day, but I use a sling to assist her. Couldn't see my vet until this morning and he said she has a dislocated patella. Due to her age he doesn't recommend surgery. She's on special urinary SO dry and wet food. Will try to cut back a bit as less weight will be easier on her movement.

Has been taking Carprofen for arthritic pain and since onset of this injury have her on Tramadol.

Am giving her PetArmour Joint-EZE PLUS. I'm considering ordering from a catalog received today. The company is Springtime Supplements. The 2 products I'm considering are: Fresh Factors and Joint Health Chewables. Among other ingredients, chondroitin, MSM, glucosamine and biotin are included.

Are you familiar with this company/product and would I be doing the best thing for my old pet to start giving her these supplements?

Many thanks.

Answer from Our Team

Joint supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin are safe for most dogs, but the evidence that they help is limited, and products vary a lot in quality. We can't comment on specific companies. Ask your vet before adding a new product, especially alongside her current medicines and urinary diet, and avoid doubling up on similar supplements.

Weight loss, if she's overweight, will probably help her more than any supplement, so ask your vet how to do it on her urinary diet. A sling, non-slip floors and short, frequent walks also help.

See luxating patella in dogs and arthritis in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
