Senior Dog Pooping in the House: Is It Just Old Age?
Please do take her to the vet. Age alone is rarely the whole explanation, and there’s often a reason that can be treated or managed. In older dogs with arthritis, common causes include pain that makes it hard to squat or to get to the door in time, bowel problems that cause urgency, and spinal problems that weaken bowel control. Some older dogs also develop cognitive decline and forget their house training.
Your vet will examine her, including a rectal and neurologic exam, and may run blood, urine and stool tests. Ask about pain relief for her arthritis, since many dogs become more comfortable and reliable once pain is under control. Notice whether she seems aware of the accidents, as that helps your vet narrow things down.
At home, take her out more often, especially after meals, and use washable floor covers. Incontinence on its own isn’t a reason to put a dog down, especially one still enjoying long walks with you. See our guide to senior dog fecal incontinence.
