Senior Bichon Yelping 10 Days After Eye Removal

Reader Question
Our 11 year old Bishon has had cataracts since she was 2. She regularly saw a doggy opth. Recently a change in her eye revealed an ulcer. This was in the eye that had progressed to the point she had no vision. We made the decision to remove the eye. She did well for the first week. Then on day 8 she began to have some pain. She would randomly yelp for no reason. Even if she was at rest and just hanging out. This morning we decided to get her in again (post op day 10) and see if it was the eye. The vet said that it was her anal gland and took care of it. I wasn't convinced as she did not have any of the symptoms she had in the past (butt dragging and licking). Now back home and 7 hours later she is randomly yelping again. The vet said the surgical site looked great and the stitches were to stay in until Tuesday (post op day 14). Any ideas

Answer from Our Team

Random yelping after surgery can come from pain at the surgical site, but also from neck or back pain, which is common in older dogs and often causes sudden yelps without obvious cause. Anal glands are possible too.

Please call your vet again and describe the pattern, including whether she yelps when moving, being picked up or turning her head. Ask about pain relief that's safe for her. Swelling, discharge or warmth at the surgical site also needs a recheck.
