Reader Question
Our 10-12 year old Akita is panting constantly. She had surgery for bloat 2 months ago and ever since she is panting constantly. Her energy level is way down and the only time she stops panting is when she sleeps. Any help?

Answer from Our Team

Constant panting with low energy two months after bloat surgery isn't expected and needs a vet check. Possible causes include pain, heart disease or rhythm problems (an ECG can check), lung problems such as aspiration pneumonia, anemia, Cushing's disease, or arthritis pain in an older dog.

Ask for an exam with chest X-rays, an ECG and blood tests. If she has pale gums, collapses, or her belly swells again, go to an emergency vet.
