Schnauzer Scratching Behind One Ear Until It Bleeds

Reader Question
MY 3 YEAR OLD MALE SCHNAUZER DOG HAS BEEN SCRATCHING BEHIND HIS RIGHT EAR FOR A VERY LONG TIME. HE KEEPS IT BLOODY MUCH OF THE TIME FROM SCRATCHING. WE HAVE HAD HIM TO TWO VETS AND HAVE ALSO TRIED MANY OVER THE COUNTER PRODUCTS. NOTHING SEEMS TO HELP HIM. WE HAVE KEPT A ELIZABETHIAN COLLAR ON HIM MOST OF THE TIME BUT HE HAS WITH DETERMINATION BEEN ABLE TO GET IT OFF DURING THE NIGHT. WHEN WE MANAGE TO KEEP THE COLLAR ON HIM, HIS SKIN BEHIND THE EAR SEEMS TO HEAL QUICKLY AND NORMALLY BUT ONCE HE GETS THE CHANCE, HE WILL TEAR IT OPEN AGAIN.

WHAT TO DO??? TRY ANOTHER VET?

Answer from Our Team

Scratching in one spot for a long time that heals with a collar but reopens without it suggests an itch that hasn't been explained. Common causes include an ear infection in that ear, allergies, a skin infection, mites, or a foreign body.

A fresh look from a vet, or referral to a veterinary dermatologist, is reasonable. Ask for a look inside the ear, a swab, skin scrapings for mites, and treatment of any skin infection. If the itch is allergic, controlling the allergy is what ends the cycle. Ask your vet about a better-fitting collar and medicine to control the itch while the cause is found.
