Scaly Skin and a Small Yellow Bump on a Young Lab Mix

by Mary
(Sarasota, FL, USA)

Reader Question
We adopted a female black lab/mix from the shelter when she was 3months old and she was spayed just before we took her home. She has had numerous health issues, in a nutshell...

Timeline of illnesses:

Age in months

3-6

eye, ear and vulva infections

treated with antibiotics, ointments

also discovered incontinence

treated with PPA

also develeped a limp (front left leg)

after x-rays discovered the bone was inflamed

treated with lowered food rations (Nature's Recipe Lamb&Rice), steriods and pain meds

6-8

Limp still there, couldn't withstand long walks otherwise she was a "happy idiot" :)Took her off PPA, still incontinent. Resumed PPA

8-current

Skin was bumpy and scaley on her back.

Treated with change of diet. Vet said she might have allergies to prior food. Now on Pinnacle Duck and Potato

Also started putting a splash of olive oil in her food and also giving her one gel capsule of fish oil/day

11

About her ongoing limp- another set of xrays

Vet referred me to specialist

Specialist referred me to another specialist

New specialist discovered elbow dysplyasia in both of her elbows.

12

attacked by raccoon

treated with rabies booster and another round of antibiotics

5 days later, underwent scope surgery and is currently in recovery.

Still has scaly skin but bumps have gone away. But now there is a yellow bb sized bump on her skin on her back. The surgical specialist said to keep an eye on it. She doesn't seem to notice that it's there...I tried gently picking at it to see if it would flake off and it didn't and she was bothered by me messing with it.

Any thoughts?

Answer from Our Team

Scaly skin in a young dog is often caused by allergies or a mild skin infection, and the bumps improving after a diet change is encouraging. A small yellow bump could be a sebaceous cyst or a skin growth.

Ask your vet to sample the bump with a needle at a recheck, and keep watching it for size changes.
