Round Bald Spots and Bumps on a Young Pit Bull
by A reader
Small round areas of hair loss with little bumps on the belly and hind legs in a young short-coated dog are most often a mild bacterial skin infection of the hair follicles (folliculitis) or demodectic mange, both common in this breed. Ringworm can also cause round bald spots.
Demodex in young dogs is not contagious to people or other dogs, and it often clears up on its own or with treatment. A skin scraping at a low-cost clinic is inexpensive and tells you which it is.
At home, keep her skin clean with a gentle dog shampoo, keep her on good flea control, and watch for spreading, crusting, odor or itching. Those mean she needs to be seen. If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a low-cost clinic, humane society clinic or veterinary school near you.
