Rescue Terrier Pants as Soon as the Car Starts

Reader Question
My terrier that I rescued from the humane society has a problem with panting. She only does this in the car. I have tried distracting her, holding her securely, putting her in a pet carrier, holding her up so she could see outside. She starts panting as soon as the engine starts. She isn't afraid of cars when we go for walks. She is stressed but I don't know how to help her. Any suggestions?

Answer from Our Team

Panting as soon as the engine starts is usually anxiety, motion sickness, or both. Try short sessions in the parked car with treats, then engine on without moving, then very short trips to fun places. A secured crate covered with a light cloth helps some dogs feel safer.

Ask your vet about medicine for motion sickness or travel anxiety; there are options made for dogs that can help while you work on the training.

See dog panting for more on anxiety panting.
