Red Growth That Fills With Blood on a Weimaraner's Muzzle

Reader Question
I have a 12 year old Weimaraner who has an irregular shaped red growth on her face. Present for about a year, has grown a little. Lesion fills with blood, dog rubs face on carpet, lesion opens, bleeds, scabs over and the process starts again. No pain. Our vet was quick to suggest surgery. She also has several lipomas on her, as well as 2firm nodes, one on the top of her head, three other on her back.

What do you think the lesion on her face is and. Do you have treatment recommendations. Thanks

Answer from Our Team

A red lesion that fills with blood, opens and scabs could be a blood vessel tumor, a mast cell tumor, or another skin tumor; it's not something that can be identified without testing. Weimaraners are also prone to lipomas, and firm nodes elsewhere should be checked as well.

Surgery is reasonable, but ask your vet to aspirate or biopsy it first if possible, so the surgeon knows how wide to cut, and to sample the firm nodes too.

See lumps and bumps on dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
