Reader Question
I have a bluenose pitbull with red eyes and mild skin irritation. I bathe her regularly with an oatmeal shampoo and oatmeal conditioner. Red eyes do not have any discharge or a cloudy film eyes are just red. What could be the cause of this?

Answer from Our Team

Red eyes without discharge, together with skin irritation, often point to allergies. Blue-coated dogs can also have color dilution alopecia, an inherited hair-follicle problem that causes a thinning coat and skin infections. It doesn't affect the eyes, so an allergy remains the likelier link between her red eyes and itchy skin.

Ask your vet about allergy management and whether her eyes need anti-inflammatory drops. If the redness comes with squinting, cloudiness or discharge, have her eyes checked sooner.
