Red Belly Sores, Sore Paws and Ear Scratching After a Walk in the Woods

Reader Question
I noticed on Sunday that my dog Ginger had some red sores on her belly (where there isn't much hair). I also noticed that her back paws were also red and sore (touch sensitivity). Ginger is a German Shepard mix. Nothing has changed with her diet and her behavior is still the same. I have not had a problem with her eating either. I live near a small patch of woods and she was out back in them on Friday. Today is Tuesday and I have noticed that the sores are not getting any better and the seem to have spread some. When I look over her body I do notice in certain areas redness. She is scratching and I try to keep her from scratching as best as I can. I have been giving her Benadryl. It does seem to keep her from scratching some. The sores are not bleeding necessarily but I have found light blood stains on my comforter. I have also noticed she has been scratching at her ears. When I look into her ears they seem a bit red and do have what look to be scabs. I have tried calling her vet office but they are closed today.

Answer from Our Team

New sores, sore paws and itchy ears after time in the woods could be a contact reaction to plants, insect bites, or the start of an allergy flare with infection. Mites are also possible.

Have your vet examine her soon, since the sores are spreading. Antihistamines often don't help much; your vet can prescribe more effective itch relief and treat any infection.
