Rat Terrier With One Pupil That Doesn't Shrink in Sunlight

Reader Question
Eddie is a Rat Terrier, his eyes are so dark brown they are almost black. I found him about a year ago, based on some of his behaviors,I think he was abused. I have always thought there was something strange about his eyes (other than the fact that they appear a little "milky"). Yesterday we were out in the yard and he looked up at me facing the sun and I could clearly see that his right pupil does not contract. It stays wide open even in sunlight. Is he blind in that eye? (he is easy to sneak up on, so easy in fact that I have gotten in the habit of saying "hi Eddie" any time I realize that I'm getting close to him, and he is very defensive if you catch him by surprise).

Answer from Our Team

A pupil that stays wide open in bright light can mean reduced vision in that eye, but it can also come from iris changes, nerve problems or old injury. Being easy to sneak up on suggests his vision may be reduced.

Please have him examined. Your vet will test his pupil reflexes and check eye pressure, since a large pupil can also be a sign of glaucoma. Speaking to him as you approach, as you already do, is a good habit.

See glaucoma in dogs and cloudy eyes in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
