Rash Near the Groin Plus a Bloated Belly and Weakness
Reader Question
I noticed my dog licking at the inner side of his right leg. I took a look and discovered a small like blackish color bump? It had some red coloring to it also. I brought him to the vet and the vet said it looked like a spider bite. He prescribed an antibiotic and a spray. He said bring my dog back if this worsens. This was 3/29/13. Well on 5/3/13 I did bring my dog back to vet. This rash or whatever has worsened. This time it was a different vet. He claims that my dog has ringworm?! He prescribed Sebozole Shampoo and Miconazole Nitrate Lotion 1% to apply every 24 hours. There,s no red ring of any source. I don't agree with this vet. My dog's stomach is also bloated and he now weighs 16 lbs. He's a Miniature Pinscher and he's 7 years old. He's having a hard time jumping up, walking sometimes. He's never weighed this much. He gets up from his bed slowly and lays down slowly too. I'm very concerned about him. He's also at times licking his lips like something's in his mouth? He reaches back towards his backside as if trying to bite at something, but he's unable to reach. This rash which had a bump or two is a black color also. He also has a wart like bump on his right side of ribs, outside skin area. This certainly doesn't resemble Ringworm to me? Could I be wrong? The stomach being bloated and he's uncomfortable? Please help?
Answer from Our Team
The rash may well be a skin infection, but the swollen belly, weight gain and difficulty jumping and getting up are more concerning. Together they can be signs of Cushing's disease or heart or liver problems, and his trouble getting up may also be pain, such as back pain. He needs a vet visit soon, and an emergency vet if his belly swells suddenly or he collapses.
Ask your vet to examine his belly, run blood and urine tests, and take a sample from the rash to settle whether it's bacterial or fungal.
