Answer from Our Team

We're sorry she's so miserable. Pus bumps that improve on one antibiotic and then return are common with staph skin infections, especially when an underlying cause such as an allergy or skin irritation is still present.

When an infection comes back or doesn't respond, specialist guidelines recommend a bacterial culture and sensitivity test so the right antibiotic can be chosen. Your vet may also suggest chlorhexidine shampoos, wipes or sprays, which work well on the skin surface, including against resistant staph.

Steroids can relieve itching, but they're a known cause of skin infections coming back and can make an active infection worse, so only use one if your vet prescribes it. Please call your vet soon, because a small puppy who isn't eating or drinking normally needs to be seen.

See pyoderma (staph infection).

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
