Puppy's Third Eyelids Flash Across When Excited
by Bruce

My 4 month old Bandog X pup haws flash up and down (blink?) at certain times. Seems more when excited.
At first they were a bit red (although not pink eye), but have been using sodium chloride and herbal rosemary and burdock eye drops and they are now clear. There are a lot of grass seeds where I walk her and thought this may have started the problem.
I am not aware of any trauma.
She is happy, full of life and eating 3 x 300 gram of raw meat and bones a day.
I am halfway through a herbal de-worming program, and she is passing worms. She has had two other chemical worm treatments at 6 & 10 weeks.
She doesn't show any sign of pain when pressed around the head, but must say, she doesn't show pain easily.
Thank you in advance,
A brief sweep of the third eyelid is normal, but third eyelids that flash across when she's excited are worth a vet check. If she also gets stiff legs, ears held stiffly upright, a wrinkled forehead or trouble eating, go the same day, because these are early signs of tetanus, which young dogs can get through wounds in the mouth. The fact that the redness cleared with saline is reassuring. Grass seeds can get trapped behind the third eyelid, though, so if redness, squinting or discharge return in one eye, have your vet check behind it.
We'd avoid herbal eye drops, since products not made for eyes can irritate them. Plain sterile saline is the safest rinse. Since she's still passing worms, ask your vet about a proven dewormer too.
