Puppy's Eyes Swollen After Rough Play

Reader Question
I have an 8 month old blue nose pibull. Yesterday he played with another dog, shortly after the underside of his left eyeball swelled. It looked as if his eye was cut by the dogs fingernails or teeth, this was my first assumption due to the fact they play very rough. Yet this morning his other eyes had the same problem and the first eye was twice as bad as yesterday. I will be taking him to the vet tomorrow, but would love some ideas for peace of mind.

Answer from Our Team

Swelling under the eyes after play could come from a scratch or bite, or from an allergic reaction to something he touched, which would explain both eyes becoming involved. A scratched cornea is also possible.

Having him checked by your vet was the right plan. If he squints, the eye looks cloudy, or he has trouble breathing or facial swelling, go to an emergency vet.

See conjunctivitis in dogs and dog eye infections.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
