Puppy With Watery Mucus Diarrhea Who Won't Eat or Drink

Reader Question
She has always had loose stools since I got her at 7 weeks. Typically, the first movement of the day is normal stool, log-like and firm. The color is more yellow/orangish because I add a heaping table spoon of pumpkin pulp to her meals to firm them up. THat's worked well ever since she. Her vet knows about this.

This morning we got up as usual went outside for toileting. She refused a treat that she normally googles up voraciously. Then she went straight to a spot to defecate. The first part was normally formed - log like and firm, but the rest of it was watery, yellow mucous. And she is refusiing food and water. Is it time to take hereto a vet?

Answer from Our Team

Yes, a puppy who suddenly refuses both food and water should see a vet the same day. Puppies dehydrate quickly, and in a young dog it's important to rule out infections such as parvovirus, parasites and swallowed objects.

Her long-standing loose stools are also worth investigating once she's well. Ask your vet about repeat stool tests, including for Giardia, and a diet trial, since persistent loose stools in a young dog often improve with the right diet.
