Puppy With Watery Discharge and a Ring Around the Eye

Reader Question
I have an 8 mo old puppy. She is 1/2 Aussie & 1/2 black lab. Lately I've noticed that she has a bit of discharge around her eye, more watery than goopy, and she has a ring around the outside of her eye, as if little hair is there. I've never had a black dog before, so I am not sure if that is what their eyes look like. She doesn't have any red in the white of her. I do live in a dry climate, and she spends 3/4 of her day outside, so I was wondering if it could just be dry eyes and a need for eye drops or something else.

Her diet consists of Taste of the Wild - puppy formula, dried duck breast treats for training, & the occasional "human-food" treat from us.

I've attached a couple pic.

Answer from Our Team

A mild ring of thinner hair around the eye can come from frequent wiping, rubbing or damp fur, and slight watery discharge in a puppy who's outside a lot is often from dust or wind. Many black dogs simply have dark skin around their eyes. A ring of thin hair around the eye in a young dog can also be localized demodectic mange or ringworm, so ask your vet about a skin scraping.

Dry eye usually causes thick, sticky discharge rather than watery tears, so it's less likely. You can rinse with sterile saline after dusty days. If the discharge thickens, the eyes look red or she starts squinting, see your vet.

See dog eye discharge for what discharge colors mean.
