Puppy With Green Eye Discharge After Visiting the Dog Park

Reader Question
Hi my 6 month old puppy has recently been producing greenish yellow eye goop or 'eye boogers' not the normal amount. His eyes are red and watery. He is allergic to a lot of things I just switched his food to half raw half kibble and he is doing great on it. We also go to the dog park a couple times a day so I was thinking it could be a cold? Any input would be much appreciated!! I have given him some bendryl to see if that helps any. It doesn't seem to be bothering him at all I just noticed a couple days ago. He is a Pitt mastiff mix.

Answer from Our Team

Green-yellow discharge with red, watery eyes in a puppy who goes to the dog park could be allergies, irritation from dust or plant material, or an infection. If he also starts coughing, sneezing or seems unwell, kennel cough viruses and other infections are possible, and distemper is a concern in an unvaccinated puppy.

Please have him examined, especially if his vaccinations aren't complete. Benadryl may help allergies but won't treat infection. Keep him away from the dog park until he's checked.

Our page on conjunctivitis in dogs explains when pink eye can spread between dogs.
