Pug Panting Heavily on Steroids

Reader Question
I have a bracicephalic dog (pug) who is on steroids for a spinal cord injury and has begun to pant excessively. The vet said it was a vside effect and to give her baby aspirin. Csan you explain this?

Answer from Our Team

Steroids such as prednisone commonly cause panting, along with more thirst, hunger and urination, and pugs pant more easily anyway because of their narrow airways. The panting often eases when the dose is lowered.

We would strongly question the aspirin: giving aspirin with steroids greatly raises the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding. Please call your vet to double-check before giving it. Don't stop the steroid suddenly; ask about tapering. Keep her cool and watch for labored or noisy breathing, which needs prompt attention.

Our page on dog panting explains other causes of panting.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
