Poodle Still Losing Hair After 8 Months of Thyroid Medication

Reader Question
My 8 year old male poodle is having very significant hair loss on entire body; but mainly on back from tail to shoulders. Has small black spots on his back that look like black heads. He has no itching or lesions.

Has been on thyroid medication for 8 months and still continues to lose hair. He is otherwise healthy acting. Eats normally and water intake is normal.

Should he be tested for Cushing? Should the Thyroid Medication be continued? Thank you.

Answer from Our Team

If hair hasn't regrown after 8 months, either the dose isn't right or the diagnosis needs another look. Ask your vet to recheck his thyroid level, timed after a pill.

Symmetrical hair loss without itch, with blackheads, can also be caused by Cushing's or other hair-loss conditions. With normal drinking and appetite, Cushing's is less likely, but your vet may suggest testing or a skin biopsy.

See hypothyroidism in dogs and Cushing's disease in dogs.
