Pomeranian's Eye Still Red and Bluish After a Dog Attack

Reader Question
My 8 year old female toy Pomeranian was attacked by a friend's dog about a week ago. Her eye was damaged and i took her to an emergency clinic right after it happened. I was wondering if it was okay to keep giving her her pilocarpine and BNP + Dex eye drops after the recommended use? It says to administer between 5-7 days, but her eye is still very red with a bluish lining around the eye. Her regular day vet is out of town so I was wondering if I could get an answer online. As far as her medical history, she has had some joint and hip problems due to a injury when she was a puppy but nothing too serious.

Answer from Our Team

Please don't keep using these drops beyond what your vet prescribed. The antibiotic-steroid combination can harm the eye if there is an ulcer, and continued redness with a bluish rim a week after injury needs a recheck within a day. Pilocarpine is usually for glaucoma, so the eye pressure should be monitored.

If your regular vet is away, an emergency clinic or another vet can recheck it.

See cloudy eyes in dogs and glaucoma in dogs.
