Pit Bull With Swollen, Crusty, Oozing Paws and Weight Loss
by Jenny
He just lays there needing help.
His owner loves him so much and doesn't want to put him down.
Can he do anything for his dog?
He is a pit bull.
He's been putting his paws in a vinegar and water bath.
He thinks its a yeast infection.
He has the sweetest sad eyes that it just hurts to see him suffering like this. Thanks.
This dog needs to see a vet today. Swollen, crusty paws that ooze, bumps all over and severe weight loss suggest a serious skin infection, often with an underlying cause such as Demodex mange, which is common in pit bull-type dogs (and in adults can point to another illness), or an immune problem. The weight loss also suggests he may be ill in other ways. A vinegar soak won't treat these causes and can sting broken skin.
A vet can do quick, inexpensive tests such as skin scrapings to look for mites, which are usually very treatable. If he stops eating or drinking, seems weak or gets worse, he needs care right away.
If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a low-cost clinic, humane society clinic or veterinary school near you.
This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
