Pink, Irritated Skin Around a Lab's Eye

Reader Question
We have taken our 3 year old lab 3 times to her vet. They have run tests and still do not have any cure for her situation. Encircling her whole exterior lid of her eye it appears pink and irritated. The vet has prescribed simplicef but that has not improved the condition. They have also taken scrapings of the area and plucked hairs for lab evaluation. Any suggestions on what this might be?

Answer from Our Team

Inflammation of the eyelid skin (blepharitis) has many causes, including allergies, bacterial infection, mites (demodex) and immune-related disease, which is why your vet did scrapings and hair plucks.

If the results don't explain it, ask about a skin biopsy or referral to a veterinary dermatologist. Allergies are a common cause in Labs, and they may need allergy treatment rather than antibiotics.
