Pink Eye That Keeps Coming Back for Months

Reader Question
I took my dog to a veteranarian. He was diagnosed with pink eye. I was given medicine, used it took him back, and he still had it.This process continued for four more times. (about 16 weeks). He still has pink eye, Im told.

The only thing is , I bought a bottle of drops that wet his eye, and it helped a bit. still, he gets a light greenish white goopy stuff in that eye, I

clean it out, and its gone for a couple of days. Then it comes back ,and looks the same.

I have spent about 400.00 going back and forth to a vet, with no success.

what should I do?

I have another dog. They both sleep in the same crate, there is nothing wrong with her. If this was pink eye, wouldnt she get it too?

I dont know what else to do, or what to look for. what can I do?

Answer from Our Team

When pink eye keeps returning after treatment, it's usually because something else is driving it, so it's not likely to be a contagious infection, which is why your other dog hasn't caught it. Common causes include dry eye, allergies, eyelid or eyelash problems, a blocked tear duct, or something stuck under the eyelid.

Ask your vet whether a Schirmer tear test and a stain test have been done. Greenish discharge that keeps coming back is a classic sign of dry eye. A referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist may save money in the long run.

Our page on conjunctivitis in dogs explains the common causes.
