Pea-Sized Growth That Suddenly Grew to the Size of a Walnut

Reader Question
My Japanese Chin/mix, 12 yo male, no medical history and healthy He has had a small pea size growth behind his ear for a longtime now. In the past 2 months it has grown rapidly to the size of a walnut. It hangs by what seems to be a string of skin. Not stuck to the body. Any thoughts on what this is? I am definately bringing him in tomorrow.

Answer from Our Team

Getting him seen was the right call. A lump that grows fast, from pea-sized to walnut-sized in 2 months, should be tested even if it hangs on a stalk. Many stalked growths are benign, but rapid growth can happen with both benign and cancerous tumors.

Your vet can do a needle aspirate and, because it's on a stalk, removal is usually simple, with the whole lump sent for biopsy.
