Patches of Hair Loss That Turn Red, Then Scaly

Reader Question
My dog is almost 7 and is a 85 lb lab/hound mix of some kind. Over the last couple weeks i've noticed some little patches of hair falling out of the sides of his torso area. It wasn't until the past week or so I noticed the areas are red and inflamed. They only seem to be red for a day or so and then they get scaly. I purchased sulfodene from Amazon and have only been using it on the existing spots about once a day. I'm still seeing new stops show up though so I'm wondering if special shampoo or something else would be better. I'm uploading an image of one of the inflamed areas and a picture of his back showing where the spots are showing up. Their are also some on his chest. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Answer from Our Team

Spots that redden and then scale, with new ones appearing, are typical of a bacterial skin infection, but ringworm and demodex can look similar.

A vet visit for cytology and scrapings will tell which treatment is right, often a medicated shampoo.
