Reader Question
I had the anal gland removed from my 7 yr old chihauhau. Since removal she will wake up from a deep sleep as if she has had a very severe pain hit her and I notice that there is a wet spot on the sheet and a very strong odor. I am very concerned about the pain she is experiencing. I also noticed that she starts shaking uncontrollably and start running around the bed. What is causing the severe pain and is there anything I that can be done to help her? I was told she would have incontinence after surgery but it would only last until the stitches were removed.

Answer from Our Team

Some short-term loss of bowel control and discomfort can follow anal sac removal, usually for 1 to 3 weeks. But sudden severe pain that wakes her, shaking and running around are not something to wait out. They could mean incision pain, infection, a fluid pocket, or irritation from leaking, and a wet spot with a strong odor could be urine, stool or discharge from the wound.

Please call the surgeon now and describe exactly what you're seeing; she may need a recheck, pain relief or treatment for infection. Keep the area clean and dry until then.
