Overweight Beagle Scooting After Anal Gland Removal

Reader Question
We just got a beagle yesterday from a family who could't care for her properly anymore. She is 8 years old and is very overweight at 47 pounds. After bowel movements she scoots to remove poop that she seems unable to completely express. She had her anal glands removed several years ago. Her poop is very soft. How can we help her with this scooting?

Answer from Our Team

Once the anal glands have been removed, scooting usually isn't caused by the glands. In her case, the soft stool is the most likely reason: soft poop smears around the anus and is harder to pass cleanly, so she scoots to wipe herself. Being very overweight also makes it hard for her to reach and keep the area clean.

Ask your vet to check the area for irritation, infection, fur matted with stool, or a problem left over from the surgery, and to test a stool sample for parasites. Firming up her stool often stops the scooting, for example with a gradual change to a better-suited diet or added fibre, so ask your vet what to feed. A supervised weight-loss plan will help too. Meanwhile, gently wipe her with an unscented baby wipe after she goes, and keep the fur around her bottom trimmed.
