Reader Question
My one year dog was developing cloudy eye symptom for about 10 days. The next evening he suddenly vomited following which he had a seizure. He recovered after a few hours but again at midnight he had multiple seizures following which he died. My vet was unable to predict the cause of seizure. Can you please tell me that was the cloudy eye related to the seizures?

Answer from Our Team

We're so sorry for the loss of your dog. Cloudy eyes, vomiting and then repeated seizures in a young dog can come from a single illness that affects several parts of the body. Examples include canine distemper, which can cause eye inflammation, stomach upset and then seizures, some other infections, and certain poisons. In other cases, the eye problem and the seizures are unrelated.

Without tests it isn't possible to say what happened. If your vet did a necropsy (an animal autopsy) or stored any samples, those may give answers. If you have other dogs, ask your vet whether they could have been exposed to the same infection or toxin, and make sure their vaccinations, including distemper, are up to date.

Our page on seizures in dogs lists common causes of seizures, including infections and poisons, and see canine distemper.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
