Reader Question
my dog has a watery eye but he does not show signs of irritation....he does not scratch or rub it ...no excessive blinking and the eye is bright and claer. There is no mucus produced at the side of the eye.....any ideas whats up ?

Answer from Our Team

Mild, clear watering in a comfortable dog with a bright, clear eye can be watched for a day or two. Possible causes include a mild irritant, an allergy, or a partly blocked tear duct.

If it continues, or you notice squinting, redness or discharge, see your vet. They can check that the tear duct drains and look for an eyelash or foreign body.

See dog eye discharge for what different discharge means.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
