One Eye Keeps Swelling and Looks Black
Reader Question
I have a one year old male golden lab mix. His whole litter was dumped at our door when he was, at our best guess, about 8 weeks old. We kept him and another of the litter. While his brother had a pretty severe case of inflammation of the joints the vet said were growing pains, this one only had a minor case. Now though, his eye keeps swelling up. It started last week. One eye will be swollen, it'll go down, the other eye swells. At first, I thought it was just that maybe he was messing with wasps or hornets or such, but as it keeps happening, it's getting worrisome because I would think he would learn to stay away and it's localized to eye and not his nose or something- though for once yesterday he had a big bump on the nose probably from a sting. The eye itself looks black. Is this maybe just repeated stings or is it something more?
Answer from Our Team
Swelling that moves from one eye to the other could be repeated stings, but an eye that looks black is worth a prompt exam. It could mean bleeding inside the eye or a change in the eye's surface or color.
Please see your vet soon, and go the same day if the eye looks enlarged, cloudy or painful.
See dog eye infections for warning signs.
This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
