Older Poodle With Hearing Problems: Deafness or Ear Wax?

Reader Question
I have a toy poodle that recently has developed moderate hearing problems.

He is about 12 years old, active like a puppy, arthritis, enlarged heart that he takes medication for.

I try to clear out the fur in his ears about once a month but it is impossible to do a good job.

I haven't tried any ear wax removal procedures as yet.

What do you recommend?

Is a Vet visit in order?

Answer from Our Team

Both are possible. Gradual hearing loss is common in older dogs, but wax, hair and debris packed in the ear canal, or a low-grade ear infection, can also muffle hearing, and those are treatable.

Yes, a vet visit is worthwhile. Your vet can look down the canals, remove any blockage and check for infection. Don't pull hair or dig in the ears yourself, and never use cotton swabs in the canal. If the ears are clear, the hearing loss is likely age-related, and hand signals and gentle touch work well for deaf dogs.
