Older Pit Bull's Eyes Sinking With the Third Eyelid Showing
by Terri
(Flemington, Mo.)
Eyes that seem to sink back, with the third eyelid covering part of the eye, are often caused by loss of muscle and fat behind the eyes. That can happen with age, weight loss or a condition called masticatory myositis, which affects the chewing muscles. A nerve problem (Horner's syndrome) and dehydration can look similar. Since the eye drops haven't helped and she's less active, an infection seems less likely.
Ask your vet to check her chewing muscles, weight and general health, and to run blood tests. Being less active can also be a sign of pain, arthritis or illness in an older dog, so a full checkup is worthwhile.
