Non-Itchy Spreading Rash That Didn't Respond to Antibiotics

Reader Question
Hello! I am concerned about a non-itchy red rash that is spreading along my dog's back. His hair fell out and the rash is spreading. However, he is not itching it and actually doesn't seem to even notice it at all. No reaction when I gave him a bath, and he is otherwise acting normal. He hasn't been boarded in a very long time, and nothing in his home environment has changed. My vet gave him a round of antibiotics that had no effect. She doesn't think it is mange, etc because he isn't itching it. Any advice?

Answer from Our Team

A spreading, non-itchy rash with hair loss that didn't respond to antibiotics needs further tests. Possibilities include ringworm, demodex mites and less common immune conditions.

Ask your vet for skin scrapings, a fungal culture and, if those are negative, a skin biopsy. Demodex isn't usually itchy, so lack of itch doesn't rule out mites.
