Newly Adopted Puppy With Mucus and Blood in Soft Stool

Reader Question
She had had worms when entered the Humane Society on 3/23/12 and was treated and cleared of them - she was spayed 3/29/12.

Adopted by us on 4/02, to the vet on 4/05 - good health- shots , stool sample - cleared of parasites again. She has been wonderful! She has been fed Authority dog food and given - dog biscuits by us.

A guest, however gave her a small piece of beef and possibly a piece shrimp at dinner on 4/03 without our knowledge til after dinner.

Reverse sneezing because of possible allergies has been witnessed when she comes from outside.

Since adopting her, stool was good.

As of yesterday 4/07- she has had diarreha with traces of blood.

Yesterday she would not eat anything - today has her appetite back and is eating and more active although still fresh mucous blood in her soft stool.

Answer from Our Team

A small amount of fresh red blood and mucus in soft stool usually comes from irritation of the large intestine (colitis). Common triggers in a newly adopted dog are stress, a diet change or rich foods such as beef or shrimp, and parasites, which a single negative stool test doesn't always rule out.

Since she's eating again and more active, it's reasonable to feed small, bland meals, but call your vet today rather than waiting. In a young shelter puppy, parvovirus and Giardia also need ruling out, since vaccines take time to protect fully. Go right away if the diarrhea becomes frequent or watery, there's a lot of blood, she vomits, or she stops eating again.

Our page on blood in dog stool explains colitis and when to worry.
