Reader Question
Hello I have a concern we just inherited a dog who is 3 years of age.

He is constantly biting at something and scratching but he does not have fleas.

He has two red rashes on his elbows like in the front and are pretty red.

I thought if something was red it was infected? What an this be from its not just his elbow

Area there are some bright red dime size rash on his feet and I think all Ho skin looks pretty

Pink and not just normal pink? I hve small kids and do not want them to be around if it is something serious!

Answer from Our Team

Constant biting with red patches on the elbows and feet can be caused by allergies, but red elbows are also a classic sign of sarcoptic mange, which spreads to other dogs and can cause a temporary itchy rash in people.

Have your vet check him soon, including skin scrapings and possibly a mite treatment trial. Until then, wash hands after handling him.

See itchy skin in dogs and scabies in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
