Natural Diuretics for a Small Senior Dog With Heart Disease
Dandelion, both root & leaf. Which is best?
Also Spirono/HCTZ tabs 25/25. What amount is safe for a ten pound, 13 year old Chiweenie. The Dandelion root is not working. He had a sycope event in the parking lot of my grocery grocery. My longtime veterinarian retired to his fishing lake's cabin a year before Poppy rescued me in 03/2020. He was surrendered to the Humane Society. I will not allow my pets to suffer when death is certain. I just want Poppy NOT to suffer or be uncomfortable.
Please don't rely on dandelion or other natural diuretics; they aren't proven to remove fluid in heart failure and can delay treatment that works. We can't give doses for any medication. A Spironolactone/HCTZ combination should only be given if your vet prescribes it and sets the dose for Poppy.
Fainting (syncope) in a dog with heart disease needs a vet exam within a day or two, or right away if it happens again, since it can mean a rhythm problem or worsening heart failure. A new vet can examine him, check his heart and set up a treatment plan to keep him comfortable. If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a low-cost clinic, humane society clinic or veterinary school near you.
