Maltese With an Enlarged Heart on Lasix Only

Reader Question
I am a true Maltese lover. I have given healthy diets to my two 10 yr old maltese only to find out that my male has heart disease. My vet took 6 months and 6 visits of Maddie having a chronic cough and even after xray couldn't tell his heart was enlarged. Vet prescribed a canned hills brand food and gave him Lasix which I give daily. After spending $1000 dollars he says he cant prescribe any other heart meds til I have an ultrasound, cost of $600. My question is if the heart is enlarged is there a medication for this other than Lasix? I love my baby Maddie but I think he is ripping me off. He wont even give me a prescription so I can get his dogfood cheaper elsewhere.

Answer from Our Team

Yes. For heart failure from mitral valve disease, the most common heart disease in Maltese, specialist guidelines recommend pimobendan, usually an ACE inhibitor and often spironolactone alongside a diuretic such as Lasix. Your vet may want an echocardiogram first to confirm the cause, because treatment differs for other heart problems.

You can ask your vet for a written prescription so you can compare prices; many vets will provide one. If the cost of an ultrasound is a problem, ask whether X-rays and an NT-proBNP blood test could guide treatment for now. If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a low-cost clinic, humane society clinic or veterinary school near you.

See congestive heart failure in dogs for more on treatment.
