It may help to ask your vet for a copy of the lab report, which will name the cell type. Your husband may have heard something like "spindle cell" or a "whorl" pattern, terms often used to describe soft-tissue sarcomas, a group of tumors that grow from connective tissue. These tend to grow locally and spread less often.
Ask your vet what grade the tumor is, whether a biopsy is needed to confirm it, and what the options are, such as surgery, sometimes followed by radiation. A veterinary oncologist can also go through the results with you.
