Long-Term Cough Medicine for a Dog With a Tracheal Stent
Thank you for your question. A dog with a tracheal stent often does need long-term cough control, and Tussigon (hydrocodone with homatropine) is one of the medications vets commonly use for that. Unfortunately, there isn't an over-the-counter product that reliably does the same job safely.
Don't give human cough or cold products without your vet's approval. Some contain xylitol, which can cause a dangerous drop in a dog's blood sugar, and some multi-symptom products contain painkillers or decongestants that are unsafe for dogs.
If cost or side effects are a concern, ask your vet whether the dose can be adjusted, or whether another prescription cough suppressant would suit your dog. Keeping your dog lean, using a harness instead of a collar, and avoiding smoke, dust and overheating can also reduce coughing. See our page on causes of coughing in dogs.
