Limping Getting Worse After TTA Surgery

Reader Question
My dog had a TTA surgery on December 20 th of last year and immediately after the surgery we noticed him getting better but over the last month we have noticed him becoming more sore/ limping more in the evening. He sometimes has difficulty getting up and he does not put all of his weight on the bad leg. I have heard of a secondary injury to the meniscus and am wondering what the symptoms are. He is getting the same amount of exercise a day so I don't think it's just muscle soreness. When we went o his follow up for his TTA theybtoldnus he looked great and to increase exercise. We did that slowly and he is not showing any signs of getting better. I'm thinking of making another appointment with his surgeon but wanted to hear another opinion..thanks for any advice you can give

Answer from Our Team

A late meniscal tear is a recognized problem after TTA and other cruciate surgeries. Signs include a new or worsening limp after a period of improvement, reluctance to bear full weight, and sometimes a clicking or popping sound when walking. Other causes include implant problems, infection, overdoing exercise, or a problem in the other knee.

Booking a recheck with his surgeon is the right step. They can examine the knee and take X-rays to check the implant, and look at the meniscus with arthroscopy if needed.

See torn ACL in dogs.
