Licked Area in a Spayed Dog: Could It Be Hormones?

Reader Question
This started to happen last year. She has been spaded and I was wondering if it might be a hormone problem. It doesn't bother her walking, but she does spend a lot of time licking the area.

Answer from Our Team

Hormone imbalance after spaying occasionally affects the skin, and spayed dogs can leak urine, which irritates the skin. But constant licking more often points to allergies or infection.

Ask your vet to examine the area and take a swab.
