Reader Question
i have an 8 yr old female chihuahua with a huge recent growth on her front paw..It started as a blister and as she was pregnant..it grew huge...She has always had a problem toenail on that paw...

The blister seemed to appear after a nail trimming...

It is almost covering her paw...and is really pink , sqwollen and smells terrible..

I gave her antibiotics for the last montth and it seemed to shrink at first...but now is growing again..

Thanks

Answer from Our Team

A large, pink, swollen growth that smells bad and is growing again after antibiotics needs to be seen by a vet soon. It may be a deep infection, possibly involving the nail bed or toe bone given the past toenail problem, but some growths on the paw are tumors, which can look like infections.

Please ask your vet for a needle sample or biopsy, and an X-ray of the toe, to find out what it is. Avoid giving more antibiotics without a vet's advice, because the wrong antibiotic may not work, can encourage resistance, and some are unsafe during pregnancy or nursing. If she is pregnant or nursing, tell your vet, as that can affect which tests and medicines are safe.

See interdigital cysts in dogs and lumps and skin tumors on dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
