Large Dog With Possible Lymphoma Panting After Short Walks

Reader Question
I notice a lump on my dogs throat and took him in for a series of xrays and was heavily sedated for the procedure. He is 132 pound mix german shephard and pitbull. We were told it was possible he may have lymphoma. After bringing him home I noticed changes in his behavior. He's not as active and playful as he use to be. He pants alot, while at rest he's fine, but when he gets up and walks to his water bowl he starts heavy panting. Is that normal?

Answer from Our Team

Panting after small efforts like walking to the water bowl, together with less energy, suggests he may be finding breathing harder. In a dog with possible lymphoma, enlarged lymph nodes in the chest, fluid around the lungs or anemia can cause this. Sedation effects should have worn off after a day or two.

Please let your vet know soon. Count his breathing while he's asleep; a rate consistently over about 30 a minute, noisy breathing or pale or blue gums need prompt attention.

See dog panting for warning signs.
