Lab Puppy With Red, Itchy Eyes After a New Food and Flea Treatment

Reader Question
I have a 10 month old yellow lab. He has had chronic digestive issues (presumably diagnosed as food allergies), a recent ear infection (more evidence of allergies) and now today (Monday) has developed eye symptoms (swollen, red, goopy, itchy) in the right eye and the left is starting. I am assuming that this is fitting into the allergy diagnosis. Specifically, I started him on a new food on Saturday (Bison and Sweet Potato) - is it possible that this new food is the culprit for the eye symptoms. Also applied Frontline Plus treatment last night - could this be a reaction to that? Thank you.

Answer from Our Team

A new food can trigger a flare within a day or two if it contains something he's already allergic to, though eye-only symptoms that spread quickly are more often caused by an environmental allergen, an irritant or an infection.

Swelling, redness and discharge that are spreading to the second eye should be checked by your vet. Mention the timing of the flea treatment, and avoid getting any product near the eyes.
