Kennel Cough in a 3-Pound Puppy: Is Iophen-C Safe?

by Miki cooney

Reader Question
My Japanese chin puppy is 5 months old and 3 pounds and has a continuous kennel cough. Can I medicate her with Iophen C as a cough suppressant and if so, what dosage?

Answer from Our Team

Please don't give Iophen-C or any human cough medicine to your puppy without your vet's direct advice. Iophen-C contains codeine, and at 3 pounds, even a tiny dosing error could be dangerous.

Puppies are more likely than adult dogs to develop pneumonia from kennel cough, so a continuous cough in a puppy this small should be checked by a vet. Go promptly if she has a fever, a poor appetite, low energy, nasal discharge or fast or labored breathing.

Your vet can decide whether she needs a puppy-safe cough suppressant or antibiotics. Meanwhile, keep her rested, warm and well hydrated, and use a harness rather than a collar. Our guide to kennel cough in dogs explains the warning signs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
