Reader Question
I have a one year old Pittbull. She itches the back area of her body all the time. To the point she has bald spots some bigger then others. She sometimes gets bumps on the bald spots and her skin gets really red. The skin on her right side of her mouth and neck are always pinker then it should be. I was told she just had hot spots or food allergies. We changed her food to a better quality and it did help the itching a little. Then we noticed it started happening again so we recently changed her food to a dog food that has only sweet potatoes and venison. Once again it cleared up and her hair grew back but just within the last week she started itching a biting herself again but in new places. She is a very active dog, and always eats all her food. She also allows me to clean her all the time and look at the spots and check her out. the spots dont smell or anything.
Answer from Our Team
Improvement on a new food that then fades is common. Store-bought limited-ingredient foods can contain undeclared ingredients, and treats or flavored medicines can break a diet trial. Environmental allergy or flea allergy can also come and go on their own.
For a true test, ask your vet about a prescription hydrolyzed or novel-protein diet fed strictly, with no other treats, for at least 8 weeks. Keep up year-round flea control too, since itching at the back end is a classic flea-allergy sign.
