Reader Question
On visiting the vet today he diagnosed my dog (8 years old 8 kilos) as having a torn cruciate ligament(verified by examination and x ray)he has recomended surgery. Is there an alternative to surgery? He is in no apparent pain

Answer from Our Team

Yes, small dogs often do reasonably well without surgery. In an older study of 28 dogs under 15 kg (33 lb), 24 (86%) were normal or improved about three years after conservative care, though that is a small study. Conservative care means at least six to eight weeks of strict rest, weight control, vet-prescribed pain relief and physical rehabilitation, with a gradual return to activity.

The knee won't be fully stable, so arthritis may develop faster, and some dogs later need surgery if they stay lame or tear the meniscus. If he's in no apparent pain, ask your vet whether a trial of conservative care is reasonable.

See torn ACL in dogs.
